Family saves $14,472 in health insurance premiums in one year by switching to an HSA!
I recently met with a family of four who wanted to reduce their health insurance premiums. They currently have a plan through Costco. The premium is over $1,500 per month for the family. They are all very healthy and don’t plan on having any more children. I recommended an HSA (Health Savings Account) plan from Group Health Cooperative for $294 per month. This saves the family $1,206 per month or $14,472 per year. The plan has a combined deductible of $4,000 and a maximum out of pocket cost of $10,200. Even if they had a large bill and met their maximum out of pocket cost they would still save $4,272! They can’t lose! In addition the IRS allows a family to contribute up to $5,800/yr into a tax deductible Health Savings Account. Even after making the maximum contribution to their Health Savings Account they still have $8.672 in savings.
The first and biggest misconception to overcome is that a Health Savings Account or HSA is not a Flexible Sending Account or FSA. Many people have had a FSA though their employer and have lost money with them. That’s because a Flexible Spending Account or FSA is a use it or lose it account. Any money left in your account at the end of the year is forfeited. With a Health Savings Acccount or HSA the money in your account does not go away at the end of the year. It continues to grow with interest and you can use the money in your account to pay for any eligible medical, dental, vision, ortodontic, or prescription expense with tax free dollars. That’s because money contributed to the Health Savings Account or HSA is tax deductible up to $5,800 per family (2 or more members) or up to $2,900 for an individual per year. 0Fidelity estimates that a couple will spend $180,000 over their life time on Medicare for co pays, deductibles for medical, dental, vision, and prescription expenses.
An HSA plan may not be the right plan for you see my website for information and quotes on other options in Washington.
