With the holiday season quickly approaching the last thing we all need to hear is that we have a transmission failure. In order to prevent this and many other little things that can go wrong in the coming months I have put together a little something for you to keep in mind when “winterizing” your car. All these steps are just suggestions for you to help keep your car running in tip top condition this winter season.
My first suggestion is to check your battery. The last thing you want to do when you are stepping into your car on a 35 degree morning is hearing your engine turn over, but not start. In order to prevent this from happening check your battery’s connections to your engine. If you find corrosion or something just doesn’t seem right, take it into a certified battery specialist for a little check up.
My second suggestion to you is to get an oil change. Now don’t go out and get an oil change if you just got one, but if you know that it has been more than 3 months or 3,000 miles, please don’t procrastinate. The longer you wait to change your oil the harder it is on your engine. Cold winter months tend to thicken the oil which makes it harder to lubricate your engine ultimately can causing serious engine damage. Something you don’t want to have to replace in these harsh economic times.
My third suggestion is to examine belts and hoses under your hood. You want to check these hoses not only for connection problems, but also plain old wear and tear. The cold winter months can do serious damage on old belts and hoses so you just want to prepare these little guys for some harsh weather. Along with examining your belts and hoses, make sure to take a glance at those sparks plugs as well. Worn out spark plugs can negatively affect how well your vehicle burns through fuel. This unfortunate performance issue can affect how your engine functions properly. The last thing you can to do is waste gas ultimately tapping into your bank account funds.
My fourth suggestion is crucial to the life of your radiator. You want to have an even 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water in your radiator. The reason you want to ensure that your radiator has antifreeze in it is to avoid your radiator from freezing in the upcoming winter months. We all know that freezing your radiator is going to cause serious damage to not only your radiator, but quit possibly the rest of your car. So please make sure that your radiator is stocked with the right mixture of antifreeze and water on a daily basis. You never know when those freezing temperatures are going to hit.
I hope that you take the appropriate precautions this winter to help maintain the performance of your car. Make sure to also check your brakes before the snowy conditions arrive. The last thing you want is to overhaul your brake system in severe winter months.
